Jellison Funeral Home
Peterborough, New Hampshire
The Jellison Funeral Home boasts a long and rich history of serving the residents of Peterborough and the surrounding towns. Owen Wiley, a resident of Peterborough, founded the home in the1850's. For the next fifty years, the home was caringly owned and operated by three different Peterborough residents, Owen Wiley, Winslow Kyes and Carl Foster. In the early 1900's Mr. Foster sold the business to the home's current namesake, Charles W. Jellison. An active member of the Peterborough community, Charles Jellison was well-known and admired for his kind and gentle nature. By the mid-1920's Charles purchased the parsonage from the Union Congregational Church to create the present-day site of Jellison Funeral Home. After converting the parsonage to a funeral home, he and his family lived in the two stories above the funeral home. Charles successfully operated the home until his death in1942. His wife, lovingly known to the townspeople as "Mother Ann," continued the operation for four more years. The home was briefly operated by Frank Faery, who then sold it to Arthur Wheeler in1951. Arthur Wheeler, his wife Marjorie and their daughter also lived above the funeral home, where they dedicated their lives to caring for the families in this region. In addition to running the funeral home, they also operated an ambulance service that served the town until the early 1970's. They were active members of the community and earned the distinction of being responsible for sounding the town's fire alarm to call in the volunteer fire department. In November 1982, Arthur sold the business to present-day funeral director Daniel L. Keaveny. Dan and his wife, Audrey White, also reside above the funeral home. Since purchasing the home, Dan has renovated the building to provide larger and more comfortable accommodations. He has expanded his services to include community outreach. He offers tours of the home to teen, senior citizen and church groups who are interested in learning more about funerals. Dan also hosts class tours for trainees at Home Health Care and Hospice.
