Peterborough, New Hampshire - Dean Frederick Hayden-Macy died on December 23, 2011, at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was surrounded by his wife and friends.Mr. Macy was born in New York City, at Mount Eden Hospital, on December 3, 1936, the son of Estelle (Hayden) and Frederick S. Macy. He grew up in New York City where he attended Columbia University and later Paul Smith College. He sang in the St. James Boys Choir and the Jerome Hines Opera Company in New York. As a boy he received vocal training from professors at Julliard. He spent several years involved in Off-Broadway theatre and worked in the entertainment business in Los Angeles, California. He later developed his own recording label, Epilogue, and was a voice teacher and coach to young singers. He worked them so hard that they referred to his method as "Olympic training for the voice," but the young students loved it and always thought his lessons were "too short."As a boy and young man, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He became an Eagle Scout, a Scouting District Commissioner, and received an honorary doctorate from UCLA for his work in designing a program for physically and neurologically handicapped scouts. He and his family moved to Peterborough from Amherst 20 years ago. He was recognized locally for his fine tenor voice. He sang with the Monadnock Chorus and in choirs and performances with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He celebrated life with joy and lifted the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His motto in everything he did was "There's no such thing as 'can't'."He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Nancy (Milen) Hayden-Macy; his deeply loved and encouraged adopted son Stephen Michael and foster daughters Linda Kohuwsky and Gennie Gaudet; Gennie's three children, Joshua, Nathaniel, and Brianna.A memorial service will be held on December 31, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on Greenfield Road in Peterborough.In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be made to Monadnock Hospital's Patient Financial Grant Fund, 452 Old Street Road, Peterborough, NH 03458, or to the American Heart Association, Two Wall Street, Manchester, NH 03101.Jellison Funeral Home, Peterborough, is assisting with the arrangements.
