Phyllis Nichols
Peterborough, New Hampshire - Phyllis Joy Coles Nichols, 90, died on December 5, 2011, at RiverMead following a prolonged decline in health.Phyllis was born September 12, 1921, at her parents’ home, North Lodge, Stogumber, County of Somerset, England, one of five children of Albert and Kate (Satherly) Coles. She attended local schools. When England became actively involved in World War II, Phyllis lived in Norton Fitzwarren, Somerset, and she worked as a British Citizen in Service to the US Army at Depot G-50, where she met Army Master Sgt. Thomas S. Nichols, Jr. After the war, Tom returned to Peterborough and arranged for Phyllis to join him a year later where they were married at All Saints' Church on November 17, 1946, followed by a reception at The Peterborough Tavern.Phyllis was passionate about England, her family, All Saints’ Church, gardening, golfing, traveling, sewing, knitting and auctions. She and Dorothea Preston started the Serendipity Shop in Peterborough, and she worked there every week for many years. She volunteered at MonadnockCommunity Hospital for several years, and served on the Peterborough Checklist on voting days, sometimes staying late into the night if "the count was off." Politics were also high on her list of interests, and she served as Co-Chairperson for Peterborough when Gov. Hugh Gregg ran for office. In her active years, she worked with Jim Grant in helping those in need in this area.Her husband died in 1986; she is survived by her daughter, Janet Kasameyer and her husband, James of Portland, Oregon; her daughter, Judith Fox and her husband, Leslie of Peterborough; her grandchildren Elizabeth Kasameyer Bartsch, Katherine Kasameyer, Jennifer Fox, Amanda (Fox) Oropeza, and Thomas Fox; and her great grandchildren, Bella Oropeza and Andrew Roberts.Calling hours will be Thursday, December 8 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Jellison Funeral Home on Concord Street. A funeral service will be held this Friday, December 9, 2011 at 1:00 at All Saints’ Church, Peterborough. Reverend Adrian Robbins-Cole, Rector, will officiate, assisted by Reverend Lewis Stone.
