Alice Mary (Bento) Weir, 90, died on Sept. 18, 2018 at home with her loving children by her side. She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 21, 1928, the daughter of Anthony and Palmira (Ferreira) Bento. She was a first generation Portuguese-American with parents and other family having immigrated from the Azores.
She grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts graduating from Somerville High School in 1946. She pursued a high school dream in her 40s graduating from Keene (New Hampshire) Beauty Academy in 1976 and became a licensed hairdresser.
In 1966 she moved with her family to Peterborough, New Hampshire living in the same home until the day she died. She was employed in customer service with Brookstone Company for five years in its early years, and Yankee Publishing. She spent 35 years in Human Services in private duty helping the elderly in their homes, work that she truly enjoyed.
She joined the fitness center at 83 years old lifting weights, and using the treadmill and bike. She led a long healthy life. She loved to read historical books especially about Thomas Jefferson and other famous people.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Weir, and all her siblings. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Weir of Peterborough, and Janet (Weir) Coffey and her husband, Paul, of Holliston, Massachusetts; and a son, David Weir and his wife, Elizabeth, of Millis, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Neal Coffey of Brick, New Jersey; Kimberley Coffey of Manchester; Jonathan Weir and Joshua Weir of Millis; and many nieces and nephews.
Her greatest pleasure was always her family. She enjoyed helping her children and grandchildren and she never minded sacrificing personal pleasures to do so. She hosted many Thanksgivings and Christmases, always happiest when family was gathered around. There were many summer vacations spent with her family in North Conway, New Hampshire.
A service to honor her life will be held at All Saints’ Church, 51 Concord St., Peterborough, on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m., followed by burial in Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough, and a reception at Reynolds Hall, across the street from the church.
All who knew Alice or her family are invited to attend.
