Barbara E. Fontaine, 95, of Peterborough, died at Rivermead Retirement Community on December 7, 2013.
Born in Beverly, MA on June 3, 1918, she was the daughter of Alice Emily (Haley) and Albert E. Hood. She was a graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1935, and of Salem State College, class of 1939.
She taught in Hermon, ME for two years and came to Peterborough in 1943 to teach grade 6 in the Central School. She married Captain Milton L. Fontaine on July 11, 1944 in San Francisco. In 1952, she returned to teaching in the Peterborough school system, teaching grade six and then junior high.
She was a member of the Union Congregational Church for over 50 years, a charter member of the Women's Fellowship and the Tuesday Niters Circle.
For many years she was active in the Thursday morning Women Golfers Group at the Monadnock Country Club and enjoyed tennis, bridge, reading, and knitting.
She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Scott Farrar Home for 17 years. She held life membership in the Peterborough Historical Society and served on the committee that was responsible for the town history, "Our Changing Town, Peterborough 1939-1989".
Her husband, Milton L. Fontaine passed away on August 20, 1999. Her sister Mary Elizabeth Preston died in 1978.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Fontaine and his wife Dianne of Barre, MA, her granddaughter Marguerite Fontaine and her grandson Nathaniel Fontaine. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 28th, 2013 at 1:00 PM at the Union Congregational Church, 33 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH. The Reverend Jill Small, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow immediately at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sand Hill Road, Peterborough, NH.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara's wishes were for contributions to be made to the Peterborough Fire Rescue Ambulance Fund, 16 Summer Street, Peterborough, NH 03458.
