Clifton D. Sawyer, 89, of Greenfield, passed away at Pheasant Wood Center in Peterborough, after a brief illness, on December 29, 2018. He was born in Peterborough, NH on October 18, 1929, the son of Jason Sawyer and Elizabeth (Doty) Sawyer.
Clifton grew up on the Sawyer farm in Jaffrey, the oldest of six brothers, and has remained in the area his whole life. As a young man he served in the National Guard. He and his wife, Joyce, married as he was finishing his time in the National Guard and celebrated their 57th anniversary this year.
He was known as a simple man with a wry sense of humor and a kind heart. Once he learned someone’s birthday, he would always remember it.
He is survived by his wife Joyce of Greenfield, and their children: Linda Muriel Stokes of Texas, Benjamin Jason Sawyer of Greenfield, and Andrea Joyce Douq of Massachusetts; his brothers Jeremy Sawyer of Hampton Falls, Sheldon Sawyer of Walpole, Peter Sawyer of Jaffrey and Perry Sawyer of Westmoreland. He will be missed by his grandsons Joseph, Christopher, and Nabil, and by his many nieces and nephews.
Clifton was predeceased by his infant son, Andrew, and his brother Donald.
Services will be held in the spring and announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Clifton’s name to the Greenfield Congregational Covenant Church, 12 Depot Road, Greenfield, NH 03047.
