Elizabeth “Betty” Nyland, 96, of Tilton and formerly of Peterborough, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2019 at the New Hampshire Veterans Home. She was born in Warwick, NY on November 19, 1922, the daughter of John A. Sowa and Mary (Kowal) Sowa.
Betty was a resident of Peterborough for many years, where she worked as the head teller at First National Bank of Peterborough. Prior to beginning this longtime career, she served in the United States Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Corporal upon her honorable discharge in 1944.
She is survived by her children, Capt. Henry J. Nyland, and his wife Patricia, of Springfield, VA, Michael J. Nyland of Spokane, WA, Jessica Sleicher of Norwood, NY, Madline Moe, and her husband Peter, of Palm City, FL, John Nyland, and his wife Roberta, of Peterborough, Carol Place, and her husband Scott, of Oviedo, FL, and Margaret Cloonan, and her husband John, of Sandwich, MA. She will also be missed by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry J. Nyland, Jr.
Services will be held in the spring.
