Obituary

Gilman Conant Shattuck, 99, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026. Born on December 19, 1926, he was the son of the late Roger Conant and Ruth (Sykes) Shattuck. A proud longtime resident of Hillsborough Center and Peterborough, New Hampshire, Gilman lived a vibrant life defined by service, intellect, and adventure.

After graduating from Nashua High School in 1944, Gilman began his studies at Dartmouth College before answering the call to serve in the United States Navy. Selected for the elite Electronics Training Program (ETP), he completed rigorous technical training—joining a specialized group that top Naval leadership considered among the top three to five percent of all wartime personnel. Following his military service, he returned to Dartmouth, earning both his Bachelor of Arts degree and his Master of Business Administration from the Amos Tuck School of Business.

Gilman enjoyed a distinguished career in executive financial leadership and entrepreneurship. He served as Vice President of Finance for Charbert, Inc. and Controller for Liberty Fabrics, alongside management roles at The Torrington Company, The Warner Brothers Company, and Gordonsville Industries. Blending his financial expertise and technical acumen, he later founded and ran his own company, Granite Computer Systems in Hillsborough.

In 1959, while touring Europe in his MGA sports car, Gilman met the love of his life, Sieglinde "Sissi." Their whirlwind romance led to their marriage in Klosterneuburg, Austria, in 1960, beginning a devoted union of over 66 years. An avid skier, Gilman carved trails across North America and Europe, even climbing Mt. Washington to ski the legendary Tuckerman Ravine.

Deeply committed to public stewardship and preservation, Gilman served five terms in the New Hampshire House of Representatives (2005–2010, 2012–2016) on the Ways and Means Committee and chaired the Hillsborough Democratic Committee. In 2010, he was named Hillsborough’s Citizen of the Year. A passionate local historian, he served as curator of the historic Manahan-Phelps-McCulloch Photographic Collection, helping preserve over 150,000 historic images documenting regional history. He was also a skilled genealogist who applied modern DNA research to map the Shattuck family lineage, as well as an enthusiast of historic transportation.

Gilman is survived by his beloved wife, Sieglinde "Sissi" Shattuck; his children, Franz (Jo-Ann) Shattuck, Helen (Daniel) Gillis, Erika (Stephen) Parton, and Roger (Gretchen) Shattuck; numerous nieces and nephews; and a loving extended family.

A celebration of Gilman’s life will be held in the summer of 2027 in Hillsborough, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gilman’s honor may be made to the Manahan-Phelps-McCulloch Photographic Collection and DAV.org supporting Disabled American Veterans.
