Gretchen Hammond Judd

Gretchen Hammond Judd, 80, of Peterborough, NH, passed away peacefully at RiverMead on October 27, 2025. She was born in Northfield, MA, on August 9, 1945, the daughter of David and Dorothy (McGowan) Hammond.

Gretchen attended Pioneer Valley Regional High School and then married her high school sweetheart Thomas William Judd, Jr. She graduated from Keene State College in 1968 after which she taught 3rd & 6th grade in Hinsdale, NH until the birth of her children, Thomas William in 1979, and Heidi Kristen in 1981.

In 1983, Gretchen and Tom moved to Peterborough, NH with their children. She became a beloved member of the community-running the Ashwood Basket Company, serving as president of the Peterborough Garden Club, and volunteering with numerous local organizations.

Gretchen loved serving her community, playing tennis & bridge, reading books, and communing with nature. She found joy in hiking, kayaking, and gardening, and especially cherished holidays and time with her family, friends, and many four legged companions. She also enjoyed traveling, and treasured peaceful days on Nubanusit Lake.

She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit.

Gretchen was predeceased by her former husband, Thomas Judd, Jr., and her sister, Susan Hammond Hill. She is survived by her son Thomas Judd III, his wife Lauren Judd, and their children Sophia, Dorothy, and Thomas; daughter Heidi Kennedy, her husband Josh Kennedy, and their children Owen, and Haven; her niece, Sarah Hill Allard; nephew, George David Hill; and her beloved golden retriever Henry.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 9, at 3:30 p.m. at Union Congregational Church, 33 Concord St., Peterborough, NH.
