Leslie "Joe" Clark

Leslie R. Clark passed away at Monadnock Community Hospital on December 1, 2015 at the age of 89. He was the son of Frank E. Clark and Bertha M. Greenwood. "Joe", as he preferred to be called, was born in Peterborough, New Hampshire on October 5, 1926 on Summer Street in the same house his mother was born and brought up in. Joe grew up in Peterborough and graduated from Peterborough High School in 1944 receiving The Citizenship Award. He went into the Navy and was a mechanic and promoted to MOMM3. On October 10, 1947, he married Thelma Francis French of Wilton and for the next 67 years resided in Peterborough.

Joe worked at Merrimack Farmers after graduation and before enlisting in the Navy; was Road Agent for the Town of Peterborough in 1955, was a substitute mail carrier, worked construction for Park, Inc. and foreman at Harris Construction. In addition to raising a family, Joe enjoyed working with his hands. He was known to help anyone he could with his knowledge of machinery. He often helped the Peterborough Fire Department by making hard to find pieces by hand. When he wasn't helping fix the lanes at the Bowling Alley, he was bowling on a league with his wife Thelma where the two of them were inducted into the hall of fame. He always enjoyed the challenge of working and fixing things from clocks to tractors. After retirement, he started his own business, Joe and his "golden truck" came to you to fix anything from logging equipment in the field to weed whackers. Later in life Joe developed a passion for woodworking. He expertly crafted custom whirligigs and crafts which can be found throughout our town to this day. His beloved wife passed on March 2, 2015. He is survived by daughter Linda and husband Donald Abbott of Francestown, son Roland Clark of Rindge, daughter Loretta and husband George Sterling of Peterborough; seven Grandchildren, fourteen Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren in addition to Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by their daughter Rebecca Clark and his sister Thelma M. (Clark) Turner. Following his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral services. A private family memorial service will be held.
