Lois Derrick

May 7, 1921 — November 9, 2015

Peterborough, NH Lois Wilson Derrick, 94, of Peterborough, NH, formerly of Gloucester, MA, died peacefully on November 9, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Lois was born on May 7, 1921 in Gadsden, AL, the daughter of Alfred Augustus Wilson and Imogen (Taylor) Wilson. Lois grew up and attended schools in Gadsden, AL. She was an avid outdoors-woman who loved fishing, hunting, skiing, and playing golf. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, she spent time hunting and fishing in Minnesota and Wisconsin and skiing in Aspen, CO and Sun Valley, ID. Lois was a volunteer for the American Red Cross during World War II, and after the war, she worked for Delta Airlines as a flight attendant, flying in a DC3 between Chicago and Atlanta. While working for Delta, she met the love of her life, Robert O. Derrick. The two were married on February 26, 1954 and lived the early part of their lives together in Northern Virginia, where they raised their children. They later moved to Gloucester, MA where they lived for 26 years. They moved to Peterborough in 2007, and Lois resided at Rivermead for the last 9 years. Moving to Gloucester and living by the ocean was a dream come true for both Lois and Bob. They loved Gloucester through and through and embraced all that it had to offer. Lois owned and operated a small antique shop on Main Street for 26 years called Beauport Antiques. She loved visiting with customers and most of all, loved her friends in the neighborhood including her friends at Mike's Pastry Shop and Virgillio's. She was very creative and enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, painting and decorating. She had a passion for entertaining and cooking and loved nothing more than feeding her friends and family, especially her children and grandchildren. Lois is survived by her daughter Jeanie Derrick West and her husband George "Gib" Bruce West of Peterborough and by her son Robert Ovens Derrick, III and his wife Marcy Altimano of Phoenix, AZ. She will also be deeply missed by her grandchildren Ian Derrick West and his wife Emily Sullivan West, Robert Braitmayer West and his wife Christina Elaine Stark, and Edward Dill, as well as her great granddaughter Violet Elizabeth West (daughter of Emily and Ian). A visiting hour will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Rivermead, 150 Rivermead Road, Peterborough. A Memorial Service will follow at 3:30 PM in the Rivermead Auditorium. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial contributions be made in Lois' name to the Peterborough Town Library 1833 Society.
