Peter
Milton
April 2, 1930 – March 12, 2026
Peter Milton passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on March 12th, 2026, in Peterborough, New Hampshire. The third of four siblings, he was born on April 2, 1930, to the late Lois Preston and Major General William H. Milton, Jr.
A long-time resident of New Hampshire, Peter moved to Francestown in 1969 with his wife, Edith, and his children, Jeremy and Naomi. Together, they lived in an elegant yellow Victorian house fronted by century-old maple trees. The beautifully landscaped gardens behind the house, planted and maintained by Peter and Edith, were the site of many barbecues, bocce games, and festive gatherings.
Peter is considered to be among the finest contemporary printmakers. He has had solo exhibitions in numerous galleries within and outside of the United States, and his work is held in more than 170 museums around the world. He studied art under Josef Albers and Gabor Peterdi at Yale University and began his life in the arts as a painter, but he had to reconsider his path after being diagnosed with color blindness in 1962. He made the fortuitous shift to printmaking, using copper etching to create incredibly detailed and complex black and white images, which English novelist John Fowles described as "mysterious and often poetic fantasies. I have always thought of [Milton's work] rather less as prints than as novels."
In addition to his success as an artist, he taught at Yale and the Maryland Institute of Art and was a visiting artist at many schools, including Dartmouth, Columbia, Yale, and the Rhode Island School of Design.
Peter will be laid to rest in Pine Hill Cemetery in Peterborough, NH, beside his beloved wife Edith, who passed away on April 14th, 2025. He is survived by his children, Jeremy (June) and Naomi (Bill), and his grandchildren, Daniel, Bethany, Emma, and Sarah. Both Peter and Edith requested that there be no service, but a memorial exhibition of his art will be arranged soon to celebrate his life and his work.
