Gena (Regena) R. McCarthy died peacefully at home on March 5, 2022, after battling metastatic breast cancer for more than 6 years. Gena was born in Peterborough, NH on May 19, 1961, and aside from some time spent in Florida she lived her life nearby to family and friends in the NH area.
She was predeceased in death by her mother Marjorie (Eaves) Nielsen, her stepfather Elden Nielsen, and her father James McCarthy.
She is survived by her sisters Kathy Fiske and her husband Tim of Temple, NH, and Rebekkah McCarthy and her partner Bob Kelly of Richmond, NH. Gena also leaves behind her aunts Betty Nutting of West Suffield, CT and Mary Lawler of Jaffrey NH, her beloved nieces Arianah Vanni Blanchard with whom she lived, Meg Vanni Dragon, and Tarali Kelly Wolfe as well as her dearest nephews Gregory, Jeremy, and Benjamin Fiske, her cherished great nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
Gena worked for many years at Harlow’s in Peterborough when it was owned by Harlow Richardson where she made many friends in the community. She had the pleasure of venturing out to sea with Harlow on his sailboat several times off the coast of Maine. She also worked at the Bedford Village Inn, owned her own housekeeping business, and finally worked at Monadnock Community Hospital where she made many more friends. Gena had a great sense of humor and the best laugh ever heard. Family and friends often joked that you could locate Gena by listening for her laugh. Gena could often be found chaperoning elementary school trips for her great nieces. She never passed a dog when out walking without saying hello – she loved all animals, music, the ocean, and all family things.
At Gena’s request, there will be no calling hours. There will be a small graveside service at the Dublin Cemetery in May. Gena would be thankful for donations made in her name to the Monadnock Humane Society or any other organization with the similar mission of supporting animals.
