Obituary

Stephen Parker Fowle, 86, died on July 2, 2026, after a long journey with Parkinson’s Disease, with his wife of 62 years, Betsy, by his side.

Steve was born to the late William Cowper Fowle and Antoinette Treadway Fowle on February 13, 1940, in Pittsfield, MA. He grew up on the campus of the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, CT and graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1958, Williams College (BA, 1962), and Brown University (MAT, 1971). On Spring break in 1961 he met Betsy Heller, a freshman at Smith College, through his parents and her grandparents. They were married on June 20, 1964, 13 days after her graduation. Steve served in the U.S. Army Reserve 1963-1969.

In addition to his family, Steve loved history, sports (as an athlete, coach and fan), the outdoors (walking or working in the woods, swimming in the ocean or lakes), travel, languages, and crosswords and card games. He taught at four independent schools in California, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, including 21 years at South Kent School. As a teacher of European and Russian history, Steve was known as a storyteller with firm but fair expectations and a sense of humor who wielded a chalkboard pointer as a sword. For many years he coached football and hockey, and at times baseball, lacrosse and tennis.

In 2008, Steve and Betsy retired to Hancock, NH, where the Fowle family’s roots stretch back more than 200 years and where Steve spent many childhood summers. In 2019 Steve and Betsy moved to RiverMead, and two years ago Steve moved into Assisted Living. His family is most grateful for the loving care he received there from nurses, aides, PT and other staff.

Steve is survived by Betsy, (The Rev. Elizabeth H. Fowle); their children, Andrew (“Andy”) Fowle and his wife, Stacy, of Westport, CT, David Fowle and his wife, Sara Daum, of Madison, WI, and Jane Gamm of Burbank, CA; and grandchildren, Adelaide, Clementine and Jasper Fowle, Ivy Daum Fowle, and Noah and Luella Gamm. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Purinton, and her husband, William, sibs-in-law and extended family.

All are welcome to attend a service of Thanksgiving for Steve’s life on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 2 PM, at All Saints’ Church, Peterborough, and a reception to follow.
