Susan M. Roper, 93 of Hancock, passed away peacefully at her home on November 24, 2025. She was born in The Bronx, NY, on July 11, 1932, the daughter of William and Lillian (Brown) Wurtz.

Sue, the oldest of her three siblings, grew up in Port Washington, New York. She attended Port Washington High, where, on her first day, she met Jack Roper. They married in 1953.

Sue and Jack traveled around the country while he was in the Navy. They settled in Stony Brook, Long Island. Sue was the backbone of their family, raising their two daughters, Peggy and Cathy. While supporting her husband as he started his own naval architecture business.

In 1971, the family moved to Hancock, New Hampshire. Sue made her lifelong friends here. She worked in the library for many years.

Sue was a very outgoing person with a welcoming smile, a great sense of humor, and a love for local news. Dogs were a very important part of her life, most of them being very large and shaggy, she passed away with her little Harley next to her.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Cathy Roper, of Hancock, and her grandson, Sam Smith of Boston, Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack, in 2018, and her daughter Peggy in 2021, as well as her siblings, Cynthia, Margaret, and William.

A graveside service will be announced in the spring.
