Anna Marie Lewis

On May 31, 2022, Anna Marie Lewis peacefully went to be with the Lord. The youngest of five, Anna Marie was born January 29, 1931, in Hendersonville, North Carolina to Earl and Catherine (Rhodes) Brown.  

She was raised on a small farm in the Blue Ridge mountains where she rode and played with her beloved horses and dogs. She attended Duke University, having graduated Hendersonville High School at 16.

In 1950, she married Sam Lewis and settled in northern New Jersey where she raised her five children. She then moved to Hancock, New Hampshire in 1973 with her two youngest, where she spent the rest of her life.  

Anna Marie was a faithful Christian and an active and integral part of her church, Trinity Evangelical in Peterborough, where she served as Elder and Bible teacher for many years. She became the Northeast leader of Women’s Aglow, an interdenominational Christian women’s organization, and spoke as witness to her faith across the country. Additionally, she served as president of the Christian Women’s Club in New England. 

She exercised her values throughout her life, making her home and heart open to anyone in need. She hosted Vietnamese refugees, traveling missionaries and any individual who was in need of a safe haven. She had a lifelong love of animals of every kind and always had a cat, dog, or several of each at her side. She was a devoted mother, grandmother to 12 and great grandmother to 13. At any given time she would be babysitting, playing with or on an adventure with one or several of her grands. She laughed easily and often, and her sense of humor will be sorely missed.  

Anna Marie is survived by her five children, Sam Lewis (Bonnie Van Houten) of Bethel, VT, Jennifer Lewis (Jim Baron) of Parsonsfield, ME, Martha Kalke (Avi Kalke) of Milford, NH, Susan Lewis (Steve Gunnerson) of South Sutton, NH and Judy Blake (Greg Blake) of Peterborough, NH; Her  grandchildren Jessica, Sam, Matthew, Anna, Danny, Ian, Jennifer, David, Jesiah, Selina, Isaac and Grayson as well as 13 great grands, Lauren, Naomi, Micah, Anders, Alice, Max, Ronny, Richie, Bella, Livy, Ty, Juliana, and Wes. 

Services will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to the Monadnock Humane Society or to an animal charity of your choice.
