Joan Ann White Stroup, age 95, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2023. She was a resident of Summerhill Assisted Living in Peterborough, NH and long-time resident of Vernon, CT and Camp Hill, PA. She was born in NY, NY on April 26, 1927, the daughter of James H. White, Jr and Dorothy (Fleming) White.
Joan had been a New England and Hartford Whaler, Wolfpack devoted hockey fan, with fond memories of her close-knit fan community. Many a night she traveled to Springfield following the Hartford Civic Center collapse. She was a member of the “91 club”.
As an avid duplicate bridge player, she achieved Life Master status. Joan had regularly played in person with friends and at the Hartford Bridge Club. She was a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Among many other interests were reading, playing the piano, and attending live theater. Her favorites among theater were “The Muny” during her few years in St Louis, and Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan.
Joan was predeceased by her husband, Paul Vincent Stroup (Boston MA) and her parents Dorothy Fleming White (New York, NY) and James H White Jr. (Boston, MA).
She is survived by her son Peter James Stroup and his wife Linda of Westwood, MA; grandsons, Christopher James Stroup and Gregory Paul Stroup of Exeter NH, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life will be held on April 22nd at a location to be determined in Connecticut.
Burial will be February 7, 2023 in Holyhood Cemetary, Brookline, MA
The family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers. Donations can be made in Joan’s name to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
