Lucy Benton Obituary

Lucy Jane Benton, age 95 of Peterborough, passed away peacefully at her home on December 29, 2020.  She was born in Dyer, Arkansas, on November 6, 1925 the daughter of Joseph and Fannie (Loomis) Lawrence.

Upon graduation from high school, Lucy moved to Washington DC in 1942 to work for the government supporting the troops. She and her husband, Bruce, were very active in the First Baptist Church of Washington which counted President Truman as a regular attendee  as it was a few blocks  from the White House.

For many years she volunteered with the Red Cross as a driver and served as a Girl Scout Leader. In 1960 she became a real estate agent, earning the designation of Broker and for 20 years owned a Re/Max franchise in Potomac, MD. Upon retirement she bought a motor home and drove the AlCan highway to Alaska with a friend – one of her favorite experiences. She moved to Peterborough in 2006 after her daughter and son-in-law had moved to the area.

Lucy is survived by daughter Jane B. Butler of Bennington.

Burial will take place in the spring at Pine Hill Cemetery, Peterborough.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lucy’s name to The River Center or The  American  Red Cross.
