Dear Carol, Janie, Susan and Lisa, my deepest condolences go out to you and your loved ones. Some of my favorite memories from growing up was going with Mr. Barr and the girls to the summer house in Vermont. Spending time on the lake, playing games with the girls, and hanging out on the raft were all thanks to him. And, every time I hear James Taylor, I think of us girls in the VW bus traveling from Peterborough to Vermont for a week of carefree summer fun. As an adult, I always enjoyed catching up with Mr. Barr upon return trips to Peterborough--most often I would run into him at Steele's. I will miss our chance encounters in Steele's when I am back in New Hampshire for visits. He was not my 6th grade teacher, but I do remember his students telling me that he had them memorize and recite poetry. He was a great teacher! Hugs and peace go out to you all. Kristine

Carol and family,
So sorry for your loss. I did not know Lawrie long, but the obituary demonstrates what an amazing part of the Monadnock community and town of Francestown he was. I loved the touching story of his students' calls and the poem written by his cousin about taking the girls hiking. We have made a contribution to the FIHS in his memory. He will be sorely missed.

In a phone conversation with Janie she told me that one of her best memories of her childhood were the hikes she took with her Dad on Pack Monadnock. I related this to my brother Nick and the result:

Climbing Pack Monadnock
for Lawrie Barr

by Nick Fleck, 1st cousin

The mountains we ascend proffer ways to climb,
to see, to find a trail in summer sun and winter rime.
With him as with us
there was a choice of trails
kept now in the backpack of the past:
The Wapack - north and south, the cliff,
and Raymond's saved for last.
The approaches were from West, North, and South: from
Peterborough, Greenfield, and Temple's height,
through paths of light and gloom
to scrubby habitats-
the Swainson's Thrush's retreat
and where the Creeping Snowberry roams.
The multiple ascents with his daughters,
who he led across a sea of rocks
and over wild waters;
these - the best
climbs - were blest.

So saddened to hear about Mr. Barr's passing. He was my 6th grade teacher. Each of us shook his hand everyday as we were dismissed. He instilled respect in all of us and I remember him for it to this day.
